ive completed the game but i recently saw a map on fire island and spoted a red icon on fire island called 'the crag'

what is it?

If by "red icon" you mean the PvP symbol - then its the arena for that island.

As has been mentioned in numerous threads, about a month into the game, ANet merged many of the arenas into the competition and teams arena. You can nolonger access them at the places they are on the map, instead you go there randomly when you are in the CA or TA.
